Spring Allergies and Your Smile: What You Should Know

Mar 19, 2026

Spring is a beautiful time of year, bringing warmer weather, blooming flowers, and longer days. However, for many people, it also means the start of allergy season. While most people think about sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes when allergies arrive, they may not realize that seasonal allergies can also affect their oral health.

At DOCS Dental, we want our patients to know that allergy symptoms can sometimes impact the mouth and teeth.

One common issue during allergy season is mouth breathing. When allergies cause nasal congestion, it becomes harder to breathe through the nose. As a result, many people breathe through their mouths, especially while sleeping. Mouth breathing can dry out saliva, which is important for protecting your teeth. Saliva helps wash away bacteria and neutralize acids in the mouth. When your mouth becomes dry, it can increase the risk of bad breath, cavities, and gum irritation.

Another symptom some patients experience is tooth pressure or discomfort in the upper teeth. The sinuses are located very close to the roots of the upper back teeth. When sinus cavities become inflamed due to allergies, the pressure can sometimes feel like a toothache. If the discomfort changes with head movement or feels worse when bending forward, it may be related to sinus pressure rather than a dental problem.

Allergy medications can also contribute to dry mouth. Many antihistamines work by reducing mucus production, but they can also reduce saliva flow. This can leave the mouth feeling dry and uncomfortable.

The good news is that there are several simple ways to protect your smile during allergy season:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and help maintain saliva flow.
  • Brush twice a day and floss daily to keep plaque and bacteria under control.
  • Use a humidifier at night if congestion leads to mouth breathing while sleeping.
  • Chew sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva if your mouth feels dry.

If you notice persistent tooth pain, gum irritation, or dryness during allergy season, we encourage you to reach out to your dental team. At DOCS Dental, we’re always here to help determine whether your symptoms are related to allergies or another dental concern.

Spring allergies may be common, but protecting your smile is always in season. If you have questions or are due for your next checkup, the team at DOCS Dental is happy to help keep your smile healthy all year long.
